Spoiler alert, I love pattern, I love pattern people, I love pattern planes, and I love pattern contests. My first introduction to pattern was watching Dave, Mike, and Matt Klein along with Mark Atwood practice at the local flying field. Those planes were AMAZING, so smooth, so fast, and so nice, I was hooked! I competed in my first contest in the summer of 1989. I was flying a Cessna 177 by Mutchler’s Hobbies, it didn’t stall turn worth a nickel and I finished near the bottom, but the contest ignited my unquenchable thirst for competition. From that day on I have been flying with the sole purpose of improving all aspects of my precision aerobatics skills. Along the way I took time off for this and that, got a bachelors degree, flew some contests, broke up with what’s her name, flew a few more contests, earned a master’s degree, then flew a few more contests. With any luck my flying won’t be significantly interrupted by life while I am acting DVP. I currently fly advanced and will write most my columns for us lowly peons on the lower end of the pattern continuum. |
