My wife Linda and I live in Manassas, Virginia. Manassas is located approximately 30 miles outside of Washington D.C. I am currently employed and serve as a project officer for NGA, a government agency responsible for the archiving and delivery of all government and commercial imagery. Turning 61 this year I had planned on retiring giving me more time for the hobby but with the down turn in the economy I decided to continue to make the daily commute into Washington. I am lucky to have a wife who is very supportive of my hobby. In turn I feel the same when she is showing our two dogs (family members in her eyes) Eddie and Tashi. I should point out this works very well. We both enjoy our hobbies and our weekends doing something we both truly like to do. I’ m sure all of the family will attend at least one pattern contest this year. My first experience with RC was with a Tri-Squire (high wing 3 channel trainer) and an Expert Radio In the early 70’s. After the Tri-Squire and two Sweet Sticks I graduated to a KAOS. With the help of other pattern flyers in the area I moved on to a Phoenix 8. I attended my 1st contest registering in basic. I still remember that contest. The radio antenna because of my nerves moved in unison to the 72 megahertz frequency. I managed to place third. Yes, there were more than 3 pilots in the class. I wanted to attend other contests. Soon it was Raleigh, Winston Salem, Fayetteville, Kingsport and others. I soon realized District 2 pattern flyers were as good at flying as they were at putting on contests. I was treated great and was accepted as a District 2 member. I just couldn’t have any of their trophies. I did finally take a few trophies home after several trips. I continued flying pattern actually trying a new class at the time, Expert Turnaround. Little did I know what the future held. I was eventually left without a coach, fellow flyer, caller and traveler. A new type of flying was becoming popular in our area, IMAC! Because of the strong interest and so many local contests I became heavily involved eventually becoming the Virginia IMAC representative. |
