ANDY HERIDER MEMORIAL PATTERN CONTEST

On August 11 and 12 the fifth annual Andy Herider Memorial Pattern Contest was held at the Quincy, Ohio, airport.  We had 17 pilots sign up, including 6 registering in Sportsman Class.  The weather was great both days which has been the norm for all 5 contests so far.  We did get started a little later than planned on Saturday and had a little too much idle time, so that the sun was starting to become a problem by the time we completed 4 rounds.

The tall corn next to the runway only claimed one casualty.  Harvey Turner had an engine stop out over the corn and his plane came down some distance from the runway.  With the use of 2 sets of walkie talkies, 2 flag poles (and 2 people willing to go into the corn with them!), and 2 good lines on the plane as it went down, the plane was located in fairly short order. Fortunately, no damage to the plane.  If the normal crop rotation is used next year-----soybeans, i.e., shorter flag poles!

It was very encouraging to see 6 entries in Sportsman Class.  Although Tim Jesky registered in Sportsman Class in support of the contest, he did not fly but his help in the running of the contest was greatly appreciated. Congratulations to Michael Cilles who took first place in Sportsman by less than 3.5 points over Marc Walter.  Watch out for all of these Sportsman guys!!

Also congratulations to Dowayne Gould who managed a hotly contested win in Intermediate Class by a mere 4000 points over his nearest competitor!!

Thanks so much to all of the contestants.  And of course the usual (although not in any way diminished) thanks to my wife Sandy, daughter Jan, and granddaughter Ashlee, for all their help, including the food; to Charlie (Jan's hubby and our son-in-law) who took care of entering all of the scores, and to the TORCS members who helped.  And as always, really big thanks to Bob Kane who has provided his computer with the scoring program for all 5 contests so far.  He even brought a printer this year, so all we had to provide was electricity and printer paper!

As all of you CDs and helpers know, it's work to put on these events.  But we really enjoy doing it each year and hope those who attend enjoy it too. God willing, we will do it again next year and as soon as we get a "go ahead" from D4 and the TORCS Club, we will file the sanction.
